Nutmeg, native to the Banda Islands of Indonesia commonly referred to as the Spice Islands, is the seed of a fruit produced by an evergreen tree. This unique tree is one of a few plants that produce two spices, nutmeg, and mace, which is the protective outer layer of the nutmeg.
2 to 3 teaspoons of ground nutmeg is equal to one whole nutmeg.
Whole nutmeg is small, about the size of a plum pit, and is usually sold with 6 to 8 seeds per jar. Grate the seeds for just the amount you need, using a Microplane or spice grinder. Unlike ground nutmeg, this variety lasts indefinitely as long as it is stored properly.
How long does whole nutmeg last at room temperature? Properly stored, the whole nutmeg will generally stay at the best quality for about 3 to 4 years. To maximize the shelf life of the whole nutmeg purchased in bulk, and to better retain flavor and potency, store in containers with tight-fitting lids.
Nutmeg is found to have health benefits, including its ability to relieve pain, soothe indigestion, strengthen cognitive function, detoxify the body, boost skin health, alleviate oral conditions, reduce insomnia, increase immune system function, and prevent leukemia, and improve blood circulation.
According to the case studies from the Illinois Poison Center, even 10 grams (approximately 2 teaspoons) of nutmeg is enough to cause symptoms of toxicity. At doses of 50 grams or more, those symptoms become more severe.
